Maui Parrotbills by PonderosaPower
Maui Parrotbills
Maui parrotbills (also known as kiwikiu) are critically endangered, and are only found in the windswept mountain forests of Haleakala, Maui. Smart little birds.

The few of you that follow my work probably noticed a couple themes going on lately... birds and food.

I just finished an internship working with cranes at the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans. It was an amazing experience and I've translated a lot of that into my work, with numerous watercolors of cranes and other birds at the institute. I'm not finished... I still have a few more ideas that haven't been put down on paper.

As for the food... everyone gets natural highs in life. I am blessed to feel this way about many things, but two of the causes happen to be finishing a piece of art and eating certain foods. I will slowly be building a portfolio of favorite endorphine-releasing foods.

I just started my avian field tech position in New Mexico, so don't be surprised to find some desert work, and obviously, more birds in my gallery.

I am happy for such a high rate of completed paintings in the last six months, but especially so because I feel I am finally homing in on a more personal style of work. I believe I have several styles of quality work, but I feel like my most recent work is honest, personal, and relieving. I've been waiting for this day for some while, and I'm excited to see where this style continues to take me.

United States
I am a recent college graduate serving as a seasonal biological technician (aka nomadic conservationist) until I go back to grad school. I work primarily with endangered species, and have worked in Arizona, Alaska, North Carolina, New Orleans, New Mexico, Washington, Hawai'i, and Georgia. I get a lot of artistic inspiration from my work, but I also get a significant amount from music, stories, and legends. I believe that art and science can go hand in hand, continuously inspiring and complimenting each other.

I spent a year as a glass blowing apprentice and that was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences I've had, but with the economy the way it is, that position was only temporary. I've also dabbled a good bit in printmaking and photography while in school. I admire all forms of art really, but watercolor, although it may not be my strength, is by far the medium I connect with most closely. The properties of water are so wild and uncontained, yet manipulatable; always lucid.

Favourite genre of music: The good kind
Favourite style of art: Impressionism/Expressionism
